摩訶般若波羅蜜多心経

観自在菩薩
行深般若波羅蜜多時
照見五蘊皆空
度一切苦厄。

舎利子。
色不異空、
空不異色。
色即是空、
空即是色。
受・想・行・識
亦復如是。

舎利子。
是諸法空相
不生不滅、
不垢不浄、
不増不減。

是故空中、
無色、
無受・想・行・識。
無眼・耳・鼻・舌・身・意、
無色・声・香・味・触・法。

無眼界、
乃至、無意識界。
無無明、
亦無無明尽。
乃至、無老死、
亦無老死尽。

無苦・集
滅・道。
無智、
亦無得。
以無所得故 . . .

菩提薩埵
依般若波羅蜜多故、
心無罣礙。
無罣礙故、
無有恐怖。

遠離一切顛倒夢想、
究竟涅槃。
三世諸仏
依般若波羅蜜多故、
得阿耨多羅、三藐三菩提。

故知、般若波羅蜜多
是大神呪、
是大明呪、
是無上呪、
是無等等呪。
能除一切苦、
真実不虚。

故説、般若波羅蜜多呪。
即説呪曰、
羯諦羯諦、
波羅羯諦、
波羅僧羯諦、
波羅僧羯諦、
菩提薩婆訶。

The Great Hannya Haramita Heart Sutra

観自在菩薩
行深般若波羅蜜多時
照見五蘊皆空
度一切苦厄。

The Bodhisattva Who Sees Freely
Was deeply practising Hannya Haramita, and at that time
He saw that the Five Baskets are all empty,
And he passed beyond all pain and difficulty.

舎利子。
色不異空、
空不異色。
色即是空、
空即是色。
受・想・行・識
亦復如是。

Oh Shariputra!
The material world does not differ from emptiness.
Emptiness does not differ from the material world.
The material world is itself emptiness.
Emptiness is itself the material world.
Sensation, Thought, Action and Consciousness
Are all just like this.

舎利子。
是諸法空相
不生不滅、
不垢不浄、
不増不減。

Oh Shariputra!
All these ways of being are empty appearances.
Not arising, not extinguished.
Not sullied, not pure.
Not increasing, not decreasing.

是故空中、
無色、
無受・想・行・識。
無眼・耳・鼻・舌・身・意、
無色・声・香・味・触・法。

Therefore, within this emptiness
There is no material world.
There is no Sensation, Thought, Action or Consciousness.
No eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body or mind.
No colour, sound, scent, taste, touch or dharmas.

無眼界、
乃至、無意識界。
無無明、
亦無無明尽。
乃至、無老死、
亦無老死尽。

There is no world of sight,
And the same for the rest; there is no world of consciousness.
There is no ignorance.
And, likewise, there is no end to ignorance.
And the same for the rest; there is no ageing and death.
Likewise, there is no end to ageing and death.

無苦・集
滅・道。
無智、
亦無得。
以無所得故 . . .

There is no Suffering, nor Causes of Suffering,
Nor Cessation of Suffering, nor the Noble Way.
There is no wisdom.
Likewise, there’s nothing to be gained.
And because there is nothing to be gained . . .

菩提薩埵
依般若波羅蜜多故、
心無罣礙。
無罣礙故、
無有恐怖。

The bodhisattvas
Rely on Hannya Haramita and therefore
The heart is without encumbrance.
And because it is without encumbrance,
There is nothing to fear or worry about.

遠離一切顛倒夢想、
究竟涅槃。
三世諸仏
依般若波羅蜜多故、
得阿耨多羅、三藐三菩提。

They escape all absurdities and fantasies,
Reaching ultimate nirvana.
The buddhas of the Three Worlds
Rely on Hannya Haramita, and therefore
They attain supreme, perfect enlightenment.

故知、般若波羅蜜多
是大神呪、
是大明呪、
是無上呪、
是無等等呪。
能除一切苦、
真実不虚。

Thus they know that Hannya Haramita
Is the mantra of great mystery.
It is the mantra of great light.
It is the mantra of which none is higher.
It is the mantra ranked beyond all ranks.
With it one escapes all suffering.
It is truth and reality, without falsehood.

故説、般若波羅蜜多呪。
即説呪曰、
羯諦羯諦、
波羅羯諦、
波羅僧羯諦、
波羅僧羯諦、
菩提薩婆訶。

Therefore we chant the mantra of Hannya Haramita.
Now we chant, saying:
Gyatei gyatei,
Hara gyatei,
Hara so gyatei,
Hara so gyatei,
Bodai sowaka.
